Case Study: Reviving a Forgotten Garden Bed
The Challenge: This garden bed sat near the front door - visible every day but unloved and unproductive. A few cherished plants survived among dead shrubs and an overgrown apple tree that shaded everything beneath it. The client wanted the space to feel alive again with autumn colour and edible plants, but without requiring her to bend and stoop for maintenance.
The Solution: We designed a low-maintenance edible garden at a comfortable working height, focusing on shrub-sized plants that would look beautiful year-round while producing food.
We chose:
Blueberries for gorgeous autumn foliage and delicious fruit
Globe artichokes for dramatic sculptural form
Tamarillos for height and productivity
After clearing the space and improving drainage with generous mulching, I pruned back the apple tree to let light through. The pruned apple twigs became useful - I wove them into small raised baskets to lift the new plants above the soggy ground, creating better drainage while adding rustic charm.
We kept and tidied the existing lavender and pineapple sage, then added companion plantings of marigolds and alyssum to support plant health and attract beneficial insects.
The Result: A transformed entrance garden that greets the client with beauty every day. She's delighted to have the space feeling alive again and is already looking forward to her first blueberry and tamarillo harvests. The garden now works with her needs - productive, beautiful, and easy to maintain at a comfortable height.
